Palaivananathar (Shiva) temple at Papanasam is located 14 km west of Kumbakonam, Tamilnadu.
The current structure is built in 12th century CE during Chola period, though the temple is an ancient one with legend extending across all 4 Yugas.
Sage Vashishta is said to have consecrated the Lingam here. Thirunavukkarasar (Appar), a 7th century CE saint, has composed a few verses in praise of the lord here.
Temple has inscriptions from the Chola period and Vijayanagara times.
The granary (for storing paddy) in front of the temple, built in 1600 CE by Raghunatha Nayak of Thanjavur, is intact!
