Pandharpur

Pandharpur Vittala temple, located 73 km west of Solapur is one of the most revered and visited places in Maharashtra.

The temple established in puranic times have parts that have been added during 12th century CE, and during 17th century CE in later Deccan style, with dome motifs and lobed arches.

The saga of Pundalika is one of the most celebrated legacies of Panduranga, mentioned in Puranas (pre-historic times), followed in recent times by countless Bhakthas including Namadev (1270-1350 CE), Jnaneswar (1275-1296 CE), Jana bai (1258-1350 CE), Purandharadasa (1484-1564 CE), Thukaram (1650 CE), Nivrithidev, Sopanadev, Muktha bai, Eknath, and Choka mela.

Sri Adi Shankara (788-820 CE) visited Pandharpur and composed Pandurangashtakam.

Located 2 km south-east on the banks of river chandrabhaga (Bheema) is Gopalpur; which houses the fortified Gopalakrishna temple, Janabai temple, and Vishnupaadha Mantap (in the river).

Time seems to stand still in Pandharpur!
