Sringeri Sharada Peetham was established by Adi Shankara in the 8th century CE. It’s located on the banks of the river Thunga.

The Rishyashringa-giri, where Rishi Rishyashringa lived is nearby.

The ancient Sri Sharada Devi Mandir has a Raja Gopura built during recent times. The Vidyashankara Mandir, in Chalukya style with Vijayanagara features, was built in the year 1338 CE by Vijayanagara kings. The Torana Ganapathi Mandir is adjacent to Sharada Mandir.

The Vidhyashankara Mandir Mandapa structure has twelve pillars known as rashi stambhas – marked by twelve signs of the zodiac. The sun rays fall on each of them in the order of the twelve solar months.
