Kedareshwara temple, Balligavi, Karnataka – located 73 km north-west of Shivamogga and 42 km south-east of Banavasi – is an 11th century CE marvel!
Known as dakshina Kedara, this West Chalukyan – Hoysala style Trikuta temple is abound with exceptional carvings, sculptures and exquisite workmanship.
The western side Garbhagriha housing a black marble Shivalinga is the oldest, dating to 7th century CE. The lathe turned pillars, the parapet, the ceilings, and the 3 temple shikharas (towers) are highly ornate with intricate carvings.
Balligavi town dates back to Satavahana-Kadamba times, with the earliest inscription found so far dating to 685 CE.
