Gangotri

Gangotri

Gangotri is located at an elevation of 10,200 ft above MSL, 100 km north-east of Uttarakashi, Uttarakhand.

Gangotri has the ancient Ganga mata temple, 18 km downstream from Gaumukh, the source of river Ganges.

Gaumukh is part of the elaborate Gangotri glacier system, that’s estimated to have a volume of 27 cubic kilometres!

The river Bhagirathy (as it’s called at Gangotri) is majestic; it flows east to west here, before turning southward at Harsil. Between Gangotri and Harsil is the Bhairoghati bridge, across river Jhanvi (Jadh Ganga), said to be the tallest bridge in Asia.

Gangotri – a serene place!
