Shravanabelagola - The Gomateshwara Temple

Shravanabelagola – Gomateshwara

The Gomateshwara Temple, Shravanabelagola, Karnataka, is located 140 km west of Bengaluru.

The colossal monolithic statue of Bahubali, revered in Jain tradition as a symbol of renunciation and self-conquest was established in 981 CE by Chavundaraya, commander of the Western Ganga dynasty.

Located on top of Vindhyagiri Hill, it is a remarkable statue carved from a single rock rising to about 58 feet.

The site is part of a larger Jain sacred landscape, with the neighbouring Chandragiri Hill, ancient basadis, memorials, and more than 600 inscriptions dating from the 7th to 19th centuries.
