Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam (Temple tank), Madurai, Tamil Nadu is located 4 km east of Meenakshi Amman Temple.
The vast square Temple tank spread across nearly 16 acres was built by King Thirumalai Nayak in 1645 CE when earth was excavated from this area for the construction of the palace.
The impressive water body with granite steps on all four sides has a central island Temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the deity that was miraculously unearthed during excavation. The tank is connected with the Vaigai River through underground channels.
The annual Teppa Thiruvizha (Float Festival) held during Thaipoosam in January/February will see decorated Temple floats move across the illuminated waters.
