Ballarat, Victoria, Australia is an inland city located on the Yarrowee River in the central highlands 115 Kms north-west of Melbourne.
The Gold rush began in 1851 bringing thousands of prospectors to the Yarrowee Valley. The yields were particularly high here – resulting in Ballarat becoming one of the most successful gold mines in the world.
Ballarat is known for open-air museum known as Sovereign Hill, a re-created 1850s gold mining settlement, opened in 1970.
