Thripurantakeshwara Temple is located in Balligavi, 73 km north-west of Shivamogga and 42 km south-east of Banavasi, Karnataka. It was built in 1070 CE by Western Chalukyas.
This temple is special for its decorative perforated windows and screens consisting of intricate stone work.
The exterior walls of the temple have erotic sculptures on panels, considered rare in Chalukyan temples.
Lathe turned pillars, exquisite carvings, raised platform (Jagati) – all are similar to the style that was later followed by Hoysala temples.
An amazing architectural treasure!
