Haridwar is located 50 km south of Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
Located at the foothills of the Shivalik ranges, Haridwar was known as Kapilasthan, Gangadwar and Mayapuri at different times in the history. River Ganga, after flowing through mountains and hills for 250 km from its source at Gaumukh, enters the plains here.
Archaeological findings prove Haridwar’s antiquity – with excavated terra cotta objects dating back to 1700 BCE. Huan Tsang, the Chinese traveller has written about Haridwar in 629 CE.
Har Ki Pauri, the sacred Ghat of Haridwar, was constructed by King Vikramaditya in 1st century BCE. It’s here that the evening Aarti happens everyday at dusk.
Amongst the many temples at Haridwar is Bharat Mata Mandir – a multi-storey temple dedicated to Bharat Mata (Mother India).
