Gangtey Gompa, also known as Gangteng Monastery, is located 6 km north of Phobjikha valley in Bhutan.
Being a prominent monastery of Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism, it is the main seat of the Pema Lingpa tradition.
The Monastery, initially built as a Lhakhang (small village monastery) in 1613, was expanded during the later part of 17th century CE. It was renovated and restored in the year 2008.
The 4 storey complex has a central tower with 5 temples surrounding it. Intricate wood work and minute painting work adores the Monastery inside and outside.
Phobjikha Valley is known for black-necked cranes that migrate from Tibet during the winter months. Interestingly, these birds are seen to be circling the monastery 3 times on arrival!
