Vattakottai Fort

Vattakottai

Vattakottai Fort located 8 km north of Kanyakumari, Tamilnadu, is a seaside fort constructed in the early 18th century CE.

The fort was constructed under the supervision of Captain De Lannoy, a Dutch naval officer with Dutch East India Company, who surrendered after being beaten by King Marthandavarma of Thiruvithamkur in the battle of Colachel in the year 1741 CE. He became the commander of the Thiruvithamkur Army later.

Vattakottai fort commands a picturesque view of the sea on one side and the hills (Western Ghats) on the other.

The fort, constructed with granite blocks had watch towers, weapon rooms, armoury, stores, water tank and related infrastructure in its operational years.
