Punakha Dzong (the palace / fortress) is located 5 km north of Punakha, Bhutan.
The dzong, built in 1638 CE by Ngawang Namgyal, is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan. Between 1744 and 1763 the dzong was expanded substantially.
Punakha Dzong was the administrative centre and the seat of the Government of Bhutan until 1955, when the capital was moved to Thimphu.
The Dzong is located near the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in the Punakha valley.
The dzong, measuring 180m in length and 72m in width, is a majestic structure with 3 courtyards and a 6 storey central tower.
