Periyar Lake, also known as Thekkady lake, is located 4 km south of Kumily, Kerala.
The lake was created in 1895 when Mullaperiyar dam was built.
Boating safari on the lake provides an opportunity to observe Elephants, Deer, Gaur (Bison), Sambar, and wild Boars in the shores.
The waters are part of the Periyar Sanctuary.
