Halasuru – Someshwara

Halasuru Someshwara Temple is located in the neighborhood of Halasuru (also called Ulsoor) in Bengaluru city, India.

One of the oldest temples in the city dating back to Chola period (more than 1,000 years ago), went through additions and modifications during Vijayanagara period. The spacious front mantapa has 48 decorated pillars. The walls of the temple and inner hall are decorated with sculptures, carvings and ornamented pilasters.

Excavations at the temple site revealed the temple tank (kalyani) which is said to be more 1200 years old! It’s popular belief that the Shivalinga in the temple is the one that was being worshiped by Rishi Markandeya.

During the times of Kempe Gowda (early 16th century) the area was famous for Jack fruit orchards, hence the name Halasuru – the Jack fruit village.

An amazing temple, in the midst of the city!
