Krishna Mandapam, Mamallapuram, Tamilnadu, is located 1 km west of Shore Temple.
Krishna Mandapam is the largest and most sophisticated rock-cut cave temple in Mamallapuram. It was established in 7th century CE during the reign of Pallava King Narasimhavarman I.
This UNESCO World Heritage site has a shallow hall carved directly into a granite hill, featuring a facade of slender, lion-based pillars.
The temple is known for its sprawling, lifelike bas-relief that depicts Krishna lifting the Govardhana Hill. Every inch of the interior wall is a masterpiece of sculpturing and storytelling – showcasing incredibly detailed sculptures of cows, milkmaids, and pastoral life.
Vijayanagara Rulers added a structural front Mantapa in 16th century CE.
Mamallapuram is now known as Mahabalipuram.
