Dakshinamukha Nandi Tirtha Kalyani temple is located in Malleshwaram, Bangalore, in front of the Gangamma temple.
This 400+ year-old temple remained buried under soil until year 1997, when some construction activities around the area led to discovery, and excavation by Archaeological Survey. The whole temple is below ground level.
The temple is elaborately built with stones and granite blocks enclosed within a courtyard and a square mantapa all around, supported by pillars, with the Kalyani (tank) in the middle.
The Nandi which normally is placed in front of Shivalinga in temples, is placed here on a platform built above the Shivalinga. Continuous flow of water from the mouth of Nandi on to the Shivalinga (in all seasons) is said to have started when the mouth of Nandi was being cleaned as part of excavation.
An amazing discovery! Right in the middle of buzzling Bengaluru city.
