Olakkannesvara Temple, Mamallapuram, Tamilnadu, is located 1 km south-west of Shore Temple. Also known as Old Light house, it’s perched majestically atop a granite hillock.
Built in 8th century CE during the times of Pallava King Rajasimha (Narasimhavarman II), the Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Over the years it doubled up as a light house for maritime purposes.
The exterior walls are adorned with masterful bas-reliefs and sculptures showcasing the peak of Pallava artistic expression; though sculptures have weathered over centuries due to the harsh saline winds.
The site offers spectacular views of Bay of Bengal and surrounding rock-cut monuments.
Mamallapuram is now known as Mahabalipuram.
