Chennakeshava Temple, Belur, Karnataka, is located 38 km north-west of Hassan.
The temple commissioned by Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana in early 12th century CE took generations to complete over a period of 103 years. The Chennakeshava Deity was consecrated in 1117 CE.
Sadly the temple was repeatedly damaged and plundered during invasions by Sultanates; and was repeatedly rebuilt and restored over the period. 118 inscriptions found in the temple complex dated between 1117 CE to 18th Century CE provides a wealth of information about the times.
The temple is remarkable for its architecture, immaculate sculpturing, intricate carvings, amazing reliefs, detailed friezes, ornamentation, and its iconography – It’s simply jaw-dropping.
The Gopura was built during Vijayanagara times.
Many famous artists of Hoysala times participated in creating this marvel including Ruvari Mallitamma, Dasoja, Chavana, Malliyanna, Jakanachari, Nagoja, Chikkahampa and Malloja.
Belur temple – What an amazing creation!
