Kedarnath is located 226 km north-east of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The ancient name of this region was Kedar Khand.
The temple located on the banks of Mandakini river (a tributary of Ganga) is at an altitude of 3,584 meters (11,900 feet) above sea level – highest among the 12 Jyotirlingas.
Built in 8th century CE by Sri Adi Shankara, the temple is an ancient one, existing from Maha Bharatha times (5,000 + years). Adi Shankara was last seen behind the temple.
One needs to trek / travel on ponies for 16 km to reach the temple from Gaurikund.
Kedarnath temple architecture is beautiful – makes one wonder how large stone slabs were moved here and handled centuries ago!
The temple is open for 6 months in a year – between May and October.
An amazing place!
