Mahabalipuram - Pancha Rathas

Mahabalipuram – Pancha Rathas

Mahabalipuram Pancha Rathas (Five Rathas) are located 58 km south of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Built by Pallava kings around 668 CE, the structures were never completed and hence the purpose is unknown.

Pancha Rathas is an example of monolithic Indian rock-cut architecture of 7th century CE.

Each of the five monuments resembles a Ratha (chariot), named after the Pandavas.  The architecture and sculpturing are exquisite!

Mahabalipuram was an active port city during Pallava times (275 CE to 897 CE). Chinese and Roman coins of 4th century CE have also been found at Mahabalipuram.

Pancha Rathas are amazing pieces of antiquity!
