Mahishasuramardini Rock Cut Mandapa, Mamallapuram, Tamilnadu, is located 1 km south-west of Shore Temple.
It’s a 7th century CE architectural marvel, masterfully carved into a granite hill during the times of Pallava King Narasimhavarman I.
This cave temple is renowned for its two monumental bas-relief panels that represent the pinnacle of rock-cut art – one featuring a breathtaking sculpture of Durga battling Mahishasura, and the other depicting a serene Anantashayi Vishnu.
The mandapa is supported by slender pillars and shafts – a signature feature of the Mamalla era. The carvings are celebrated for their frozen-motion quality, including the intricate details of Durga’s weapons and emotive expressions of demons.
Mamallapuram is now known as Mahabalipuram.
