Raya Gopuram, Mamallapuram, Tamil nadu, is located 1 km west of Shore Temple.
The Raya Gopuram is an imposing, unfinished gateway that stands as a silent sentinel over the hillock in Mamallapuram, behind the Sthala shayana Temple and Bhageeratha Penance rock.
The Gopuram was commissioned in the 16th century CE Sri Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara. Architecturally, it follows the grand Vijayanagara style. It was never completed due to political shifts that happened.
Although it remains incomplete, the gateway serves as a vital historical link, showing how earlier rulers sought to develop and enhance the sacred landscape of Mamallapuram.
Mamallapuram is now known as Mahabalipuram.
