National War Memorial

National War Memorial

The National War Memorial opened on 25th February 2019, is located east of India Gate, New Delhi.

The Memorial has four concentric circles designed as a Chakravyuha, an ancient Indian war formation. It has a central obelisk with amar jyothi (eternal flame) in hounour of amar jawan (immortal soldier).

The 4 concentric circles are named Amar Chakra (Circle of Immortality), Veerta Chakra (Bravery), Tyag Chakra (Sacrifice) and Rakshak Chakra (Protection).

The circle walls are inscribed with the names of armed forces personnel martyred during armed conflicts since 1947.

One goes through mixed feelings while being there.

It causes embarrassment when we get to know that the Indian Armed Forces first proposed a national war memorial in 1960, and the decision to build one was taken only in 2016.
