Subramania temple Tiruchendur is located 35 km south of Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
One amongst the Arupadaiveedu (six abodes of Muruga), the ancient puranic name of this temple was Jayanthipuram.
Celebrated in the Tirumurugatrupadai, a classic written in 3rd century CE, the temple was built, renovated, and modified during Pandya, Chera and Chola times. In recent times, extensive renovation and extensions were carried out by 3 Sanyasis – Mauna Swami, Kasi Swami and Arumuga Swami – over a period of 72 years!
4 lithic inscriptions from Pandya times dating between 875 CE and 1282 CE indicate the prominence of the Temple during those times.
Valli Cave is located under a sandstone cliff overhanging into seashore. A fresh-water spring called Skanda Pushkarani or Nazhi Kinaru is also located on the seashore.
An amazing temple on the seashore!
