Margabandeeswarar temple, Virinjipuram, Tamilnadu, is located 14 km west of Vellore.
It’s said that Brahma (creator) also known as Virinji, worshipped Lord Shiva here; hence the name Virinjipuram. The current structure was built during Chola times (12th Century CE) and later extended during Vijayanagara times (15th Century CE).
The 2 Kalyana mantapas (wedding halls), Maha mantapa and Gopurams are heavily ornamented with exquisite carvings.
Marga bandhu means the one who guides us the path; also means the bandhu (protector) while we’re on the path / road.
Large outer praakara (outer round) has high walls, with double deck mantapas on the north side, typical of Vijayanagara style.
