Shore Temple in Mamallapuram, Tamil nadu, is a magnificent structure that stands as one of the oldest structural stone Temples in India.
Built by the Pallava King Rajasimha (Narasimhavarman II) in 8th century CE, the Temple was protected, developed and expanded during the Chola period (9-11th century CE) and Vijayanagara period (14-16th century CE).
The Temple complex has 3 Garbha Grihas – two dedicated to Shiva and one dedicated to Vishnu. The exterior is adorned with beautifully carved Nandi sculptures sitting along the perimeter wall.
It is believed to be the last surviving Temple of a seven-Temple complex – the other six Temples having gone under water. Tsunami in the year 2004 unearthed some parts and pieces of ancient submerged Temples.
The Temple overlooks Bay of Bengal, and the coastal environment is harsh.
Shore Temple – an amazing piece of history!
Mamallapuram is now known as Mahabalipuram.
