Ujjain - Bhartrihari Cave

Ujjain – Bhartrihari Cave

Bhartrihari Cave is located 3 km north of Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

Situated on the banks of river Shipra the cave is a good example of rock-cut architecture of 11th century CE, with multiple rooms. Bhartrihari, the stepbrother of Vikramaditya, used to reside and meditate here. He was a scholar, sage, and a poet.

The large Pipal tree near the cave denotes the samadhi of Rishi Bhartrihari. An ancient Kali temple and Nava Nath temple are in the complex.
