Sthala Shayana Perumal Temple, Mamallapuram, Tamil nadu, is located 0.80 km west of Shore Temple.
A renowned 8th century CE Temple built by Pallava Ruler Rajasimha (Narasimhavarman II), it is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu. The Temple saw extensive renovations and expansions during the Vijayanagara times in 14th century CE under Ruler Harihara II.
The unique feature here is that Vishnu is depicted in a reclining posture directly on the floor – without his serpent Adisesha couch.
The Temple serves as a landmark for the town. It’s also the birthplace of Bhootath Azhwar, one of the twelve Azhwars.
The Mantapas, Pillars and Walls are adorned with intricate bas-reliefs, carvings and sculptures including detailed depictions of Dashavatara.
Mamallapuram is now known as Mahabalipuram.
