Aiyarappar Temple is located in Thiruvaiyaru, 12 km north of Thanjavur, Tamilnadu.
The ancient temple finds mention in the 7th century CE Tamil work, Tevaram. The current structure, built in 9th century CE by Cholas, was renovated, modified, and expanded by Vijayanagara kings and Nayaks later.
Nandi (the divine bull of lord Shiva) is said to have been born here. The temple has some beautiful mural paintings on the ceilings that are intact.
Thiruvaiyaru is renowned for its association with Saint Thyagaraja (1767 – 1847), one of the trinities of Carnatic music. The house where Sri Thyagaraja lived and composed some of his greatest works is nearby. The Samadhi is on the banks of river Kaveri.
