Thenupuriswarar (Shiva) Mandir, Patteeswaram, Tamil Nadu is located 7 km south-west of Kumbakonam.
Current structure is built by Chola kings in 10th century CE, renovated by Nayak kings in 16th century CE.
The temple is ancient – Maharshi Vishwamitra and Maharshi Markandeya are said to have worshipped Shiva here. The Deity is revered Tevaram, the 7th century CE Tamil work.
The grand temple is associated with Thirugnana Sambandar – and Muthupandal festival is celebrated every year in connection with the legend.
