Palani Murugan temple is located on top of Palani hill, 60 km west of Dindigul, Tamilnadu.
Palani used to be known as Thiruaavinankudi during Sangam period. The deity, consecrated by Sage Bhogar, is created out of an amalgam called Navapashanam (nine rocks / poisonous substances).
This ancient temple was renovated in 2nd century CE by Chera Perumal kings and later by Pandya Kings. Inscriptions from 1251 CE are available in the temple.
Palani temple is one of the Six Abodes of Murugan.
Apart from the straight-steps and a winding way (elephant way), mechanical winch and rope cars are available to go uphill.
