Gagan Mahal, Penukonda, is located 76 km south of Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, and 141 km north of Bengaluru.
Penukonda was the second (summer) capital of Vijayanagara Kings.
This legendary 16th century CE palace, located inside ajit fort, has 3 stories and terraces – the centre portions of the ground floor and first floor have rooms. The palace is similar to structures at Hampi, especially lotus mahal, with arches, domes and vaults added later, on top of Dravidian, temple like elements.
Ramaswamy temple and Vishwanatha temple can be seen from the tower, on the north-side.
