Pichavaram – located 15 Kms east of Chidambaram, Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu – is world’s second largest mangrove system (after Sunderbans).
Spread over 1,100 hectares, the system consists of 4,400 big and small canals, 50+ islands of various sizes, with more than 400 water routes available for boating.
The mangrove trees are permanently rooted in 3 – 10 feet deep saline water.
More than 170 species of birds have been spotted in Pichavaram mangroves comprising of resident, local and international migrants.
