Kumbakonam – Sarangapani

Sarangapani Temple Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu is one of the 108 Divya Desams and one of the Pancharanga kshetrams, located in the midst of busy market place.

The temple is believed to have been built 2000 years ago, modified in the 7th Century CE by the Pallava King Mahendra Varma, and then by Cholas in the 11th Century CE and later renovated by Nayak Kings during 15th century CE and then by King Krishnadevaraya during 16th century CE.

The Gopuram is massive! One of the tallest at 173 feet height with 90 feet length and 51 feet width! And it’s highly ornate.

The temple sanctum is an architectural masterpiece, designed like a chariot with wheels drawn by horses and elephants. The twin temple chariots are third largest with each weighing 300 tons.

A must visit while in Kumbakonam.
