Thanumalayan Temple, Suchindram, Tamilnadu is located 7 km south-east of Nagercoil.
The current structure was built by the Cholas in 9th century CE. Later expansions and renovations are attributed to Thirumalai Nayak and Thiruvithamkur Maharajas.
It’s one of the 108 shiva temples revered by the Kerala culture (though currently the temple is in Tamil Nadu). A Trimurti sthala, Thanumalayan has ‘Sthanu’ (Siva) ‘Mal’ (Vishnu) and ‘Ayan’ (Brahma).
The temple tower is 144 feet tall with 11 stories.
The Anjaneya statue in the Praakara is 22 feet tall, carved in a single granite stone – it’s one of the tallest statues of this kind. The Anjaneya statue was lying buried in the temple since 1740 fearing invasions and rediscovered and erected in 1930.
