Pattadakal temples located on the banks of Malaprabha river in Bagalakote district, Karnataka, are an 8th century CE marvel that’s by and large intact even after 1300 years!
Built during Chalukya period, there are eight major temples at Pattadakal complex – the oldest being Sangameshwara temple built in 697 CE during the reign of Vijayaditya Satyashraya.
The Virupaksha temple is the largest and most sophisticated of the monuments, built in 740 CE. The famous Kailasanatha temple at Ellora caves was modelled on this temple.
Pattadakal is a demonstration of the carving, sculpting and architectural prowess of Chalukya times.
