Mekedatu - Cauvery River

Mekedatu

Mekedatu, situated ~ 98 Kms away from Bengaluru via Kanakpura, is a natural spectacle. Here, river Cauvery rushes through a gorge that is so narrow that a goat could leap across! Mekedatu in Kannada means goat’s leap.

Up to Sangama, where river Arkavati joins river Cauveri, one could go in a vehicle. Crossing the river at Sangama (by foot during summer months, else in a coracle) one could take the local bus on the other shore to reach Mekedatu, 3.5 kms down stream.

The river with its relentless ferocious flow over millions of years has been carving artistic shapes on the hard granite here. Deep hollows in the bedrock cause strong swirls and undercurrents that one needs to be cautious about while visiting the place.

On the way to Sangama, one could take a detour to visit Chunchi falls.
