Medak fort – built around 12th century CE by Kakatiya ruler Pratapa Rudra – uses the elevation and natural rocky topography to its maximum advantage. Medak is located 95 Kms north of Hyderabad with its history dating back to Sathavahana times (2nd Century BC).
Spread over 100 Acres at an average elevation of ~ 90 metres from ground level, the fort houses a small lake, a barrack, a warehouse and a 11 feet long cannon from 17th Century CE.
The 3 levels of entrances – Prathama (first) Dwaram, the Simha (Lion) Dwaram and the Gaja (Elephant) Dwaram – and most of the fort walls are intact!
