Manas Sarovar (Manasarovar), located 40 km south of Mt Kailash in Tibet, China, is a fresh water lake at 15,060 ft above mean sea level.
The word Manasarovar is a combination of two Sanskrit words – Mānas (mind / intelligence / conscience) and sarovar (Lake).
Manasarovar is relatively circular in shape, with a circumference of 88 km, depth reaching upto 90 meters, with an average surface area of 320 sq km.
Manasarovar is surreal. It’s ancient. It’s vast. It has references in puranas such as Srimad Bhagavatha. It has something, that’s out of ordinary!
4 great rivers originate in the vicinity of Manasarovar – Indus, Brahmaputra, Sutlej and Karnali (a tributary of Ganges).
It’s fascinating to note that Manasarovar, Kedarnath and Badrinath are at the same Latitude – 30.7 degree North. Also, Gangotri and Mt Kailash share same latitude – 31.0 degree North.
Manasarovar is revered by Hindus; and religions such as Bon, Budhism and Jainism.
Overflow from Manasarovar goes into an equally large dumbbell-shaped salt-water lake known as ‘Rakshasthal’, through a natural channel.
Manasarovar – what a place!
