Durbar Square

Kathmandu – Durbar Square

Durbar square is located in central Kathmandu, Nepal. With the history of more than 1,000 years, the Durbar square has open courts, Temples, Sthamba, Stupas, Idols, heritage buildings, royal homes, water fountains and more…

An earthquake in 2015 damaged the buildings significantly – renovation and restoration works are underway.

Construction of the palace in the square is said to have started at the times of King Sankharadev (1069 -1083 CE).

Some of the temples in the square were built by Mahendra Malla (1560–1574 CE). Buildings in the square seemed to have undergone repeated renovations over the period. It was the seat of power until 1896 CE when the palace moved to the Narayan Hiti Palace.

History comes alive here! It’s a UNESCO world heritage site.
