Kathmandu - Pashupatinath Temple

Kathmandu – Pashupatinath

Pashupatinath temple, Kathmandu, Nepal, is located on the banks of river Bagmati.

The temple is an ancient one; the current structure in typical Nepali pagoda style was built in 5th Century CE by Lichchavi King Prachanda Dev, after the previous building was ‘consumed by termites’.

The temple precinct consists of a collection of temples, monuments, images and inscriptions, raised over centuries.

A meter high 5 faced Shivlinga – facing east, west, north, south and upside – is allowed to be touched only by 4 Bhat priests, who (surprisingly) always are scholars from Karnataka, India.

The temple complex and the Garbhagriha were left untouched in the massive earthquake that shook Kathmandu in 2015.

A surreal, historic place!
