Swayambhunath Stupa, Kathmandu, Nepal, located atop the hill 4 km west of Thamel, is amongst the oldest spiritual sites in Nepal.
The Stupa is established in the beginning of 5th century CE by Licchavi king Vṛsadeva, though the establishment is said to have been visited by king Ashoka (3rd century BCE).
The eastern stairway built by Pratap Malla (17th century CE) is steep. There’s an alternate (car) access from the southern side. The Stupa complex consists of a number of shrines, temples and a monastery.
It’s a good place to catch panoramic views of the city, valleys and the sunset!
