Panchalingeshwara temple in Govindanahalli, Karnataka, located 5 km north-west of Kikkeri, 20 km south of Channarayapatna is a unique Hoysala temple constructed around 1238 CE.
Built during the times of King Vira Someshwara, by a team of sculptors lead by the famous sculptor of Hoysala times Ruvari Mallitamma, this is a rare example of panchakuta (five shrines) construction.
The five Garbhagrihas (sanctums) are connected to a long pillared Mantapa (hall), by vestibules with Sukanasi above.
The entrance to the temple complex is via two porched entrances supported with lathe turned pillars. The carvings and sculptures upon the five Garbhagriha gopuras are distinct.
A unique Hoysala temple – what a creation!
