Kappad beach is located 18 km north of Kozhikode, Kerala. This is the place where Portuguese sailor Vasco da Gama landed in 1498 CE.
A stone monument installed here commemorates the landing with the inscription ‘Vasco da Gama landed here, Kappakadavu, in the year 1498′. This incident was so significant that it changed the course of the whole (Indian) nation, influenced its history and destiny over the next 450 years!
Exploring the sea route to India, Vasco da Gama along with 170 fellow sailors landed on these shores over 500 years ago; to the delight of the Portuguese sailor, Zamorin, the king of Kozhikode received them well.
The depth of the ocean here made landing possible for sailors.
