Edakkal Caves

Edakkal Caves on Ambukuthi mala located 24 km east of Kalpetta, Wayanad, Kerala, are two natural caves; one above the other at an elevation of 4000 feet above MSL.

The rock art inside the caves in the form of carvings and etchings represent objects and cultural signs of the past societies – consisting of humans, animals, trees, wheels, carts, tools, symbols, letters, and numeric signs.

These carvings and etchings date to 6,000 BCE – yes, a good 8,000 years ago!.

Some signs depicted in Edakkal caves indicate its links with Indus Valley civilization (3300 – 1300 BCE) – prominent amongst them being man with a jar cup.

Edakkal caves – where antiquity grips one in awe!
