Waitomo Glow-worm caves located 197 km south of Auckland, (76 km south of Hamilton) north island, New Zealand, is a natural spectacle; It’s one of its kind, known for its population of Arachnocampa luminosa, a glow-worm species found exclusively here.
Explorations in the year 1887 brought-out the limestone formations to the external world. The caves are expected to have been formed about 30 million years ago.
Glow worms glow in the dark – in florescent indigo and yellowish-green colours.
Stalactites and stalagmites formations inside the caves have been formed over millions of years – just to get a perspective, an average Stalactite grows one cubic centimetre every 100 years!
Cave entrance leads us to a spiral walkway going down 60 feet (from ground level) to enter the cave formations.
