Darasuram, Tamilnadu – a village in the outskirts of Kumbakonam houses one of the archaeological marvels of Chola era – Airavateswara temple, A UNESCO world heritage site.
Built in 1160 CE by Rajarajachola II, this temple alongwith Brihadeeswara temple at Tanjavur, and the temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, constitutes ‘Great Living Chola Temples’ of Tamilnadu.
Classified as Karak kovil (chariot temple), its wheels act as two sun dials. The art, architecture, elaborate and exquisite stone carvings here are awe-inspiring!
A quaint place to include in our itinerary when we are in the magical triad region of Tiruchirapalli – Thanjavur – Kumbakonam!
