Doddabasappa Temple, Dambal, Karnataka, located 53 km west of Koppal, is a 12th century CE marvel built by Western Chalukyan kings.
Built in 1126 CE, it was known as Ajjameshara temple (after its builder Ajjayanayaka) and acquired the name Doddabasappa as it has a big Nandi at the entrance.
The architecture is based on a rare, intricate, 24-pointed uninterrupted stellate (star-shaped) plan.
The Gopura (above Garbhagriha) is unique, exquisitely carved, and replete with sculptures and designs. Pillars are highly ornamented and walls contain pilasters and embellishments with intricate work.
An incredible creation!
