Azhagar Kovil, Tamilnadu is located 21 km north-east of Madurai.
This ancient temple finds mention in Sangam literature (3rd century CE), and in Divya Prabandham, the celebrated hymns by Azhwar saints (6th century to 9th century CE).
The current structure of the temple was built in 13th century CE during Pandyan era, and renovated and modified during Vijayanagara times (15th century CE).
The temple has tall granite boundary walls and a majestic Raja Gopuram (entry tower). Heavily ornamented mantapas with spectacular carvings and sculpted pillars stand as a testimony to the art and architectural prowess of those times.
For some reason, we were not allowed to take photos inside the temple praakara and mantapa areas.
